Tech Tips from the Hive

Welcome to the first installment Tech Tips from the Hive. Tech Tips will be a regular feature of the staff newsletter where we hope to provide you with useful information about technology for both work and personal use. We will also use this space to answer technical issues that our support staff sees regularly in the College. Additionally, we’ll try to provide information on programs, apps, technology, etc. that you may find useful at home or at work.

Did you know that as a member of the staff at UK you are entitled to access all the latest versions of the Microsoft Office Applications at no cost? Meet Jennifer Allen!

Co-Director, Hive. Director of Communications & Creative Services

1. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love to hang out with my husband, Ben, and our boys (ages 10 and 8) and see what adventures we can find – hiking, baseball, swimming, camping, etc. I love photography, reading and crafting. If I have free time, you’ll usually find me crafting, sewing, baking, reading or planning a birthday party! I can’t forget about movies – we are also a family that loves watching movies.

2. What is your favorite movie or book? I can never pick just one favorite of anything. I’m an avid reader of a wide variety of books. My favorite would be fiction and lately I’ve been into dystopian novels. I just finished reading “We Are Called to Rise” and “The Giver.” I’m now reading “Station Eleven.” “The Martian” is my favorite movie I’ve watched recently.

3. What is your favorite animal? Dogs – we have two: Rosie Cupcake (the crazy 3-year-old boxer/lab mix) and Lord Tyrion (the even crazier 8-month-old redbone hound/lab mix).

Leadership Forum Notes 2015

My Dear A&S Colleagues,

Please, feel free to use or pass along my notes from the 2015 Leadership Forum talks that were streamed last week.  Many of you may have attended, but for those of you who were unable to attend or watch the live-streams, I hope this is helpful!  The talks were very interesting and relevant to the work we do.

Most kind regards,

Erin Norton Miller, Department Manager, Appalachian Studies, UK Appalachian Center, Arts & Sciences, erin.norton.miller@uky.edu, 859-257-4852

UK Women’s Forum Conference

This year I was urged by two mutual friends at UK to make sure I signed up for the UK Kentucky Women’s Forum Conference.  Just getting started in a new role, I was concerned I wouldn’t have time for an entire day away from the office, but I signed up and made plans to go.  Boy was I glad I did! The day was wonderfully orchestrated with a keynote speech from our own Kirsten Turner to start things off.  The theme was “Memoir” and Kirsten stayed on theme as she relayed an impactful “moment in time” to us and encouraged each of us to seek and be ‘network resources’ during times of crises.  It was especially heart-warming to hear from our own Chief of Staff as she expressed her heart for fitting work into our busy, complex lives.  Another A&S staff member in attendance, Jacqueline Burke said, “I really enjoyed Kirsten Turner’s key note speech.  She is so good at connecting with whoever she is speaking with, one on one or to an entire group.  It really spoke to me as a working parent.  Two thumbs up!”

Meet Linda Elmore!

Hi Everybody!  My name is Linda Elmore.  I am the Financial Coordinator in the Patterson Office Tower IBU.  I grew up in San Jose, California.  I taught elementary and Middle School out in the desert near Palm Springs for 9 years.  I moved to Kentucky looking for a new adventure.  I met my husband and we were married a couple years later.  We enjoy watching movies, eating out, walking, gardening and traveling.  We have three crazy cats that keep us busy.  I came to UK in 2012 after working at Urban Active in their accounting department for 9 years.   I originally worked in the UK Medical Center in Pediatrics with their grants and came to Arts & Sciences when my position was eliminated because of an IBU reorganization.

1.       What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to read self-help books and work on my family genealogy.  I have 700 people in my family trees that I have identified so far.  It’s time to travel to France, Germany and Ireland to find more records of my ancestors.

2.       What is your favorite movie or book?

Meet Rick Mullins!

Hey Everybody!  My name is Rick Mullins and I’m a Lead Budget Analyst in the ScienceIBU.  I was born in Gainesville, on the campus of the University of Florida.  My parents must’ve realized while I was a toddler that I was destined to spend my life on a campus much further north.  We moved to Somerset, KY (about 75 minutes south of Lexington) when I was 2 years old.  I moved to Lexington in 1999 and began working as a Student Worker here at UK.  This is my second go ‘round with A&S and I couldn’t be happier to be back.

Student Spotlight

Hi! My name is Hannah Jeffries. I am a senior ISC major and Psychology minor. I grew up in Naples, Florida, but have been visiting Kentucky all my life. I love creative writing, singing, seeing theatre performances, cooking (as long as I don’t have to clean), traveling, and hanging out with my best friends in the world, who I’m lucky enough to live with.

The reason I choose UK is actually a funny story--my dad grew up in Louisville and is a diehard Cardinals fan. When I was a sophomore in high school, I used to say I was going to go to Kentucky just to bug him. The bugging eventually turned into insistent begging for him to take me to see campus. He finally did and I fell in love with it, especially after seeing Willy T. Ever since then, I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else--I only applied here and one other school!

Tasha Ramsey

Student Spotlight

Hi! I’m Tasha! I’m a senior English major with a minor in Communication. I grew up in a small town called Utica, Ohio where I graduated from Utica High School in 2012. My family has always been amazingly supportive and has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams - even if that meant moving a state away from them! As an English major, I LOVE to read. I’m currently reading Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield in my spare time. I also enjoy running, doing yoga, baking, and spending time with my wonderful boyfriend, Daniel, and our cat, Catsby (named after The Great Gatsby, of course). I love UK, but I’m excited to graduate!

Four years ago, if you were to ask every person that I graduated high school with what college I was going to, they probably all would’ve have told you the University of Kentucky. It was widely known that I was the only UK fan surrounding by a bunch of Ohio State fanatics. My mom jokingly says my dad brainwashed me to like UK. And maybe she’s right, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. For me, coming to UK was a dream come true.

1.  In my spare time I read, enjoy movies and love to travel.  I’m willing to go almost anywhere I’ve never been before.

2. I don’t have a favorite movie, there are just too many to pick from, but my favorite book is “The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglass Adams.

3. I’m kind of a “foodie” so I like to try new things.  When we travel, we’re always using Tripadvisor and Yelp to find local, out of the way places.  My wife and I also do a lot BBQ as well.  We have a BBQ smoker and she has created her own dry rub recipe.

4. I make short films on the side. I’ve never made a dime doing it, but it’s always a pleasure to create something that didn’t exist before. I also collect movie memorabilia.

Meet Aaron Vaught

I grew up in Somerset, KY and came to Lexington in 2006 to attend UK. I graduated with a BA in Geography in 2009 and an MS in Education Policy in 2012. As an undergraduate, I helped out in a preschool classroom at Booker T. Washington Elementary. I was also an Arts & Sciences Ambassador my senior year. In graduate school, I worked in the Center for Student Involvement and was the advisor to the Center for Community Outreach programs.  Along the way I met my wife Ashley and we have been married 4 years.

1.       What is your favorite movie or book? I tend to read more periodicals/newspapers than books. I am usually reading a combination of The Economist, BusinessWeek, National Geographic, and Mental Floss.

2.       What is your favorite animal? Definitely a dog person. My wife and I have a goldendoodle named Luna (of Harry Potter fame).
