Hi! My name is Hannah Jeffries. I am a senior ISC major and Psychology minor. I grew up in Naples, Florida, but have been visiting Kentucky all my life. I love creative writing, singing, seeing theatre performances, cooking (as long as I don’t have to clean), traveling, and hanging out with my best friends in the world, who I’m lucky enough to live with.
The reason I choose UK is actually a funny story--my dad grew up in Louisville and is a diehard Cardinals fan. When I was a sophomore in high school, I used to say I was going to go to Kentucky just to bug him. The bugging eventually turned into insistent begging for him to take me to see campus. He finally did and I fell in love with it, especially after seeing Willy T. Ever since then, I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else--I only applied here and one other school!
I work in the Department of Physics and Astronomy as a front office assistant. I’ve been working in Physics & Astronomy for two years now. I do pretty much anything they need me to--filing, faxing, copying (and fixing the copier), hotel reservations, guest speaker paperwork, department organization, ordering supplies, managing events...and that’s just to name a few!
Working in A&S has been beneficial to my future because I had never worked in an office before, and being a PR track ISC major, I know I’ll be in offices all the time! So that in itself is good experience, but I’ve also learned how to roll with the punches when things don’t go as smoothly as you’d like. I’ve also had a ton of experience working with a large and diverse group of people which I find to be truly valuable.
A good example of when I suggested a change to improve the office would be- when I realized that there are three other student office assistants in P&A, and sometimes our shared desk can get a little cluttered with all the different things we’re working on. So, I suggested we start a shared email account so that correspondence within the department could be centralized and we could also upload all of our documents onto a shared drive. Ever since then, things between the four of us have run a lot more smoothly and things get done in a much more efficient manner.
