Did you know that the Bluegrass used to be like the Bahamas? A few hundred million years ago, our region was a tropical seascape. Frank Ettensohn, a professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at UK, offered a geology tour of the region to share the details with Earth Day celebrants.

Adam Meredith and Luke McAnally, two A&S majors, were part of a small group of students that went to the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in Washington, D.C. last month.

Charlie Fieseler is an undergraduate student majoring in Physics and Mathematics. Charlie is also a member of A&S Ambassadors, a team of undergraduate students that visit neighboring grade schools to discuss what it's like to be a UK student. Spring is on its way! Gardens will be growing, and fruits and vegetables will be ready to eat - or preserve, pickle, freeze or dry! Lisa Conley is a graduate student in the Department of Sociology, and has been working on a documentary film about home food preservation methods in Appalachia since 2009.

The UK Asia Center wants to connect UK and India on an institutional level. Srimati Basu, an associate professor in the Departments of Gender & Women’s Studies and Anthropology and a member of the Asia Center Steering Committee, went on a trip to India to tour potential partner institutions in February 2012.

Melynda Price is a professor in the College of Law, and is the organizer for the 2012 Annual Black Women's Conference, which is in its 18th year. It will take place from March 22nd until the 24th, at various locations on UK's campus and the Lyric Theatre.

Achmad Hidayatullah, Connor Appelman and Devon Wilson, three students from A&S Wired, are organizing an event to take place during Dead Week. All Keeneland Hall residents are encouraged to study between 3pm and midnight on December 4th and 8th, 2011, for "Study for the Cure," a study-a-thon fundraiser that will benefit the Kentucky Children's Hospital.

Pauline Stratman is vice president of the Chemistry department's Graduate Student Association. One of the tasks associated with her position, and a personal passion for her, is doing outreach to the Lexington community. A special time for the Chemistry department to educate the community is during National Chemistry Week.

Kim Clark works for the UK Mathematics Department as accounting staff, but her involvement on campus doesn’t stop there! In addition to helping organize the A&S Diversity Committee, she is also an active member of the UK Women’s Forum.
