Cross Cultural Workshop to Explore Intercultural Experiences

by Derrick Meads, Carmen Stinson

(March 25, 2014) — Have you ever wondered what it is like to be part of a culture totally different from your own? The Cross Cultural Workshop, held at Natural Bridge State Resort Park Saturday, March 29, will help students explore and understand intercultural experiences.

The workshop, hosted by the University of Kentucky International Center and CATalyst, will bring international and domestic students together to talk about culture, learn interactively from each other, and clear up confusion and tension that cultural discussions often cause.

Cross Cultural WorkshopStudents will participate in simulations that will teach them how to react in culturally diverse situations, partake in group discussions, and hike through the breathtaking Natural Bridge State Resort Park.

"This is an amazing opportunity for students to get in touch with their own identity while learning to appreciate others," said Karen Slaymaker, assistant director of International Student and Scholar Services and facilitator of the workshop. "Participants will celebrate diversity while learning to facilitate intercultural interactions that will occur in their daily lives, and most likely, in their future careers."

Approximately 25 students will be selected to attend this event. There is a small fee of $10 that includes transportation to Natural Bridge Resort and Park, dinner, and the impact of a cultural experience that will last a lifetime.
