ITIQ

 

ITIQ is a program of online, 1-credit hour courses designed to teach today’s students about various information technology tools, skills, and methods to use technology successfully in the academic, professional, and personal aspects of their lives. Students learn tools to help with academic research, stay organized, collaborate virtually, analyze and visualize data, publish online content, create dazzling presentations, and much more!

There are currently three course offerings, ITIQ-Intro, ITIQ-Web Publishing, and ITIQ-VisLab.  The courses are typically offered during 6-week part-of-term courses toward the beginning or end of the semester.   

ITIQ-Intro covers the following topics:

 

  • Digital Video Basics including optimizing your computer for video and finding video sources, and tips for downloading and installing free and University licensed applications including: Microsoft Office, Zotero, Google Earth, and Google Sketchup
  • Video conferencing and collaboration using Adobe Connect.
  • Information management tools including Zotero, Evernote, and Drop-Box, and information searching strategies using UK’s online library resources, Google, and other search engines.
  • An introduction to intellectual property, copyright and open-source licensing issues, and information regarding digital citizenship, including social networking, e-etiquette, password security, information privacy, and other current issues.
  • Creating a presentation with PowerPoint or Prezi, adding audio with Jing, and sharing your presentation online.

ITIQ-WebPub covers the follwoing topics:

  •  Introduction to the notion of Web 2.0 and web publishing in general.  Includes an overview of intellectual property, copyright, and online security, as well as the basics of registering a domain name and finding a host provider. 
  • Collaborative publishing with Google Drive and wikis. 
  • Simple HTML skills to build a basic webpage, including text and graphics using UK’s Sweb server.
  • Creating Webpages using Google Sites and other WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) page editors
  • Blogging using Blogger and/or Wordpress, including how to install Wordpress Plugins and Blogger Widgets.

 

ITIQ-VisLab is a 300 level course teaching data analysis and visualization tools.  This course is challenging in a 6-week time-frame.  Students should have successfully completed ITIQ Intro, and/or ITIQ Web prior to considering this course.  Students should already have basic Internet, Web, and Spreadsheet skills, in addition to be comfortable installing applictions prior to taking this course. 

Topics include:

  1. Overview and examples of collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data for research and communication.
  2. Identifying, locating, and collecting data – using the open Internet, public data sources, and mobile devices.
  3. Data refinement and fusion – Using Google Fusion Tables, Google Refine, XLS, and other open source data processing tools.
  4. Visualization and Presentation of 2D and 3D Data and artifacts using Google Charts, Graphs and other Graphics tools.
  5. Construction and presentation of 3-Dimensional Objects, Environments and GEO-Spatial Data using Google SketchUp, Google Earth, and other web based apps.
  6. Final Project: Using the tools and skills developed to make a persuasive presentation including editing, and hosting it online.
